5 ways to increase the natural light in your home

5 ways to increase the natural light in your home

Posted on July 28, 2019September 26, 2020 by jenny

Can you believe it’s been 6 years since we moved into our home? We all lead busy lives and it’s only when we seem to have a significant break from work that we start to notice things that need doing around the home.

We’ve already done quite a lot to make our house feel like home and this summer we will be changing the floor in our open plan lounge/dining room. It’s the room we all spend the most time in and the flooring just isn’t hard wearing enough for our needs. Perhaps that’s not surprising with two children but we actually found that the vinyl floor hadn’t been stuck down properly and has ripped and buckled in several places.

Our family home is mainly north-facing which means that we get sun in the front of our house but only in the morning. Unfortunately we get most of the sun at the back of our house and our living space is quite dark and cool. This can be a good thing, especially during last weeks heat wave but sometimes we would love to increase the amount of natural light that comes into our home. I’ve done a little research and I think there are several ways that this can be done.

5 ways to increase the natural light in your home

Top of my list would be to install large windows or doors, such as these origin bifolds to welcome in more natural light. I think they are stunning and would provide a great way to not only let in more natural light, but would also increase our home’s ventilation and look pretty stunning too.

A cheaper alternative would be to add mirrors or lights to your living space. I am a big fan of mirrors throughout our house and I think they are an easy way to create light and more space.

You could always change the colour of your walls to increase natural light. I love a dark feature wall but this might not help create an open and light space. Neutral or light tones would work better to reflect any natural light.

Of course if space permits you could think about adding skylights to your home. I’ve Pinned some great ideas for my dream home which feature skylights in my kitchen extension. I think they create a really modern look but also help add much-needed light to extensions with little room for windows.

You could also think about changing your furniture. We swapped our dark wooden furniture for white bookshelves and a more natural, light wood. We also tried to get rid of any furniture that we didn’t need or use. This has helped to create a less cluttered home, which is much easier for modern family life.

Really useful tips – we’re changing our furniture at the moment to lighter colours to make our rooms look a bit brighter and bigger, but we’ll also consider painting a lighter, more neutral colour. Thanks for posting!
