Yay for half term! We’ve all been looking forward to half term for a while. The weather isn’t great so it’s so easy to stay at home and catch up on some films. I love embracing the seasons and watching seasonal films so have been watching some classic Halloween films from Warner Bros. including Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, Scooby-Doo Zombie Island and The Witches. Read on to find out just why we like these films and for your chance to win them!
Beetlejuice (1988)
After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia. I loved this when I was younger and now my kids do too!
Corpse Bride (2005)
Victor (Johnny Depp) and Victoria’s (Emily Watson) families have arranged their marriage. Though they like each other, Victor is nervous about the ceremony. While he’s in a forest practicing his lines for the wedding, a tree branch becomes a hand that drags him to the land of the dead. It belongs to Emily (Helen Bonham-Carter), who was murdered after eloping with her love and wants to marry Victor. Victor must get back aboveground before Victoria marries the villainous Barkis Bittern (Richard E. Grant). My 7 year old loves this stop-motion animation (he loves all stop motion!) and now we all enjoy this film.
Scooby-Doo Zombie Island (1998)
The Mystery Inc. team split up to do their own thing but come together again to solve a real ghost mystery. The gang of sleuths gets more than they bargained for when, on Moonscar Island in the Louisiana bayou, they find themselves amongst worshipping un-dead werecats and a swarm of zombies. This is my 5 year olds favourite film, she loves Scooby!
The Witches (1990)
While staying at a hotel in England with his grandmother, Helga (Mai Zetterling), young Luke (Jasen Fisher) inadvertently spies on a convention of witches. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) reveals a plan to turn all children into mice through a magical formula. When they find that Luke has overheard, the witches test the formula on him. Now, with the help of Helga and the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer (Rowan Atkinson), Luke the mouse must fight back against the witches. We love the book this is based on but this is a pretty good adaptation with a great cast.
