Vintage toys and happy memories

Posted on September 8, 2014May 27, 2024 by jenny

I was charity shopping at the weekend which won’t be a surprise to my regular readers. I often like to share my vintage finds and have a great collection of vintage Fisher Price toys. I’m not quite sure what it is I like about them, but I love to collect them whenever I see one I don’t yet have.

vintage Fisher Price toys

I’m a child of the 80s so as well as my Fisher Price toys I had a small collection of My Little Pony, some boxes of Technical Lego and a beautiful dolls house my grandfather made for me. My toy collection seems quite restrained in retrospect and as my mum reminded me at the weekend, they all fitted in one toy box.

My children on the other hand, have lots of toys. They have a large proportion of the storage in our living room which houses their Lego, Playmobil, Sylvanian Families, trains, dolls, Peppa Pig, Disney Cars and Planes toys. Yes, they have far too many and I am really bad at spoiling them.

I wonder which of their toys, if any, we will put away in the loft when they grow out of them as they can’t bear to throw them away, or sell them on eBay (which is more likely).

vintage games

Fortunately for me they love my vintage Fisher Price toy collection. I loved playing with toys and games when I was younger and this is the great thing about being a parent, living it all over again! Recently we’ve started playing card games and although both my children are dreadful cheats (just like I was!) we have a lot of fun.

What do you remember from your own childhood? Rubiks Cube and My Little Pony or Sindy and Action Man? Please share your memories with me in the comments below. Over the next couple of weeks a different retro toy will be featured by John Lewis, along with the story of the toy’s history. This week it’s the Fisher Price Chatter Telephone. Why not take a look and see! You can also join the conversation on Twitter or Facebook, just look out for the #mytoystory hastag.

I love looking at vintage toys, I think I had that first Fisher price one, we also have an old fisher price radio at home, as well as loads of old action men and dinky cars that were my big brothers.

I remember having a old drum which I loved, a Sindy house and a Little people family tree. That was my favourite 🙂

My little boy was given the fisher price wind up ‘tv’ when he was born, by one of my good friends. He’s 2 and a half now and still loves it, whilst I treasure it and the thought behind the gift.
He also plays with my ‘My little pony’ collection that I saved!
    Fabulous

You can’t beat old school board games. I have some great memories playing those.

Monopoly, ludo, snakes and ladders come to mind. We used to love these.
