Over the past few months I’ve noticed that my children are asking to spend more time in their bedrooms. Part of me is pleased as we’ve spent a lot of time on their bedrooms, the other part of me is sad that the living floor is no longer constantly covered in Lego bricks. I think it’s so important that our children have bedrooms which are optimised for both play and sleep. One of the reasons we moved house was so that they could each have a decent sized room as they were growing up. Today I wanted to share my top tips for optimising your child’s bedroom.

Top tips for optimising your child’s bedroom for both play and sleep

What kind of things do you look for when designing your child’s bedroom? For us their rooms needed to reflect their personalities whilst also being fully optimised for play and sleep. We wanted their rooms to have a more grown up feel, allowing them to transitioning into their tween years, with lots of space for their toys but also space to be creative with a desk and of course, a comfy bed to sleep in.

We invested in a cabin bed for my son. His room is the smallest in our house so we needed to plan everything carefully. He’s always been a bookworm so it was really important that we incorporated lots of shelving and storage for his books. He also loves to be creative so we wanted to add a desk space. We found a cabin bed was perfect for him as it helped save floor space whilst being really practical. Whilst a younger child might enjoy creating a secret den under their bed, we were able to incorporate storage units, shelves and even a pull out desk. I can’t tell you how much stationery my children have both accumulated. They just love collecting pencils, rubbers, sharpeners and stickers so desk space with extra stationery storage was essential. I encourage them to do their homework downstair with me, but they both enjoy drawing and colouring in their rooms. We’ve tried all kinds of things to keep their things tidy. A few items have been life-savers – a drawer tidy for organising pens and pencils, as well as a desk tidy for everyday items. Finally I can find exactly what I need, when I need it, and then put it back where it belongs. It’s a real mission to encourage my children to be tidy but finally all our hard work is playing off and they have done a great job in keeping their rooms tidy.

My children have a lot of toys. They love their toys so we wanted to strike the right balance in their bedrooms. Storage space for displaying their latest lego creations was needed, as well as boxes with lids to store their smaller toys away. We use this idea in our living room too and it works really well. We encourage them to change what they have on display so their rooms always stay fresh. Sometimes they forget what they have inside the toy boxes but I love that this helps them keep the floors clear of toys.

Our family love books so it’s a priority for us that we have books in every room. I really like furniture which compliments each item so invested in some matching shelves for books. My sons collection quickly outgrew the shelves so there are books inside his wardrobe, in his cupboard and on his desk too.

I hope you like my ideas for optimising your child’s bedroom. Growing up I loved my bedroom and I really want my children to enjoy their rooms too. I think we’ve helped create the right balance with the furniture we’ve chosen, creating personal spaces with plenty of place to play with a calm environment to encourage sleep too.
