When I saw a swap on LucyKate Crafts blog I just couldn’t resist (even though I swore I needed some time off from swaps during the Doll Quilt 3 Swap!). The swap is for a handmade toadstool, using her wonderful tutorial.
My swap partner, Tiffany, requested vintage colour combinations so I’ve used a lovely thrifted pillowcase for the top.
This is my first attempt, propped up in my new vintage kitchen cupboard because it doesn’t stand up on it’s own! I’m sure I must have missed a step – any advice anyone?

May 21, 2008 at 11:40 pmdid you remember to weight the stalk base with a pebble?, try putting a couple of small pebbles in instead of just one, it’s all about getting the balance right between weighting it in the base enough to be able to hold the size of the toadstool top. or another trick is to make the stalk flare out towards the bottom, making it wider at the base so it will take a larger pebble. do this by using 2 pieces of fabric for the stalk instead of one, both cut in a trapezoid shape, put them face side together. sew up both sides then turn right way round, hep presto, you have a stalk narrower at the top, and wider at the bottom. hope that helps!. my husband thought i was mad the other evening, rooting around in the gravel in the back garden with a torch looking for pebbles that were the right size and shape : )

just remember, if you make the bottom wider, pop the pebble (wrapped in a little polyfil) in from the bottom before you sew on the felt base. the first time i tried it this way, i didn’t, then couldn’t get the pebble in as the top was too narrow!, trial and error, hey!
