Gingerbread house finds – vintage gingerbread cutter

Did you know today was World Baking Day? World Baking Day is all about sharing the joy of baking cakes, and what better way to share the love than #caking! I have been very busy baking but I wanted to share this vintage Nutbrown Party Time Cutter Gingerbread Man. I love the original packaging which proudly says “For use in making super Gingerbread Biscuits, highly popular with young people”. Eek, that makes me feel old! The cutter was made in England by Thos. M. Nutbrown Ltd and the cover shows a freaky gingerbread man with scary eyes, buttons and belt…

    Recipe for lebkuchen

Lebkuchen is a traditional German baked Christmas treat, similar to gingerbread. I’d never tried it before but as the ingredients were so similar to gingerbread I thought I would like it. After a couple of attempts I have perfected my recipe – the spices balance the black treacle perfectly – which makes 20 biscuits. Recipe for lebkuchen   Ingredients: 400g self-raising flour 115g unsalted butter 115g light muscovado sugar 1 egg 400g black treacle 1tsp ground ginger 0.5tsp ground cloves 0.25 tsp chilli powder Method: Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl, beat in the egg and black…

    Home furnishings and more

A while ago I was contacted about becoming a product tester for Dunelm Mill, the home wares and interiors company with stores across the UK. There are two stores within easy reach of where we live in London but you can also see their extensive range online and there really is something for everyone! They sent me a couple of items to review and I love both of them. Firstly, a craft book from the very talented Melly & Me: Sewn Toy Tales. Based on an Australian blog I’ve read for years, this book contains 12 fun characters to make…

    The Diamond Jubilee Victoria sponge

This overcast weather is no good for my mood so I thought I would share some good news I recently received. Last week I found I was chosen from 130 applicants to be one of 25 Morphy Richards Innovator for the next 12 months! To be chosen I wrote a very silly post on my top tips for housework which they obviously enjoyed reading. Being a Morphy Richards Innovator means I will be reviewing some of their great products and giving feedback which will help them to develop and improve the products in their range to make running a household…

Banana muffins – not for toddlers!

I made a delicious batch of banana muffins yesterday with some help from my toddler. Trying to be frugal with the food shopping I had stupidly let a bunch of bananas go too ripe and couldn’t throw them away.   Banana muffins are really simple so here’s my recipe. You will need: 225g unsalted butter 225g caster sugar 225g self-raising flour 4 eggs 1/4 tsp nutmeg 2 mashed ripe bananas Heat the oven to 180 degrees. Mix the butter, sugar, flour, eggs and nutmeg together then add the mashed bananas and mix well. Spoon the mixture into your muffin cases…

    Olympic cupcakes

As we passed the 100 day milestone to the Olympic Games last week my thoughts turned crafty! What could we make? We applied for tickets for three events and we know we’ve got some tickets, we’re just not sure for what events or if we’re able to take Little Sis as we applied when I was pregnant. We have less than 100 days to find out. Olympic cupcakes We haven’t been baking in a while so thought we would make the basic fairy cake recipe from Mary Berry’s Baking Bible, a recent birthday present which I am enjoying working my…

Thomas the Tank Engine birthday cake

There’s a great article in the latest issue of Gurgle magazine on how to throw the perfect party. I was pleased to see that Big Brother is ahead of himself, having a Thomas the Tank Engine themed party at the grand old age of 2! We knew that we wanted to make a special cake for his birthday and that it would probably be train-shaped. My husband’s mother set the bar really high, making my husband a concorde birthday cake when he was little. I have to admit that we had a bit of help with the cake from the…

    Gingerbread and butter pudding

Not sure what to do with that lovingly created gingerbread house? Why not make it into a tasty gingerbread and butter pudding? My romantic Valentine-themed gingerbread house needed to make room for my Easter-themed gingerbread house but I didn’t want to throw it away. The gingerbread was quite thin so I thought it might make a delicious gingerbread and butter pudding. Here’s what I did. You need: a gingerbread house, deconstructed a couple of slices of bread, buttered 1/2 pint of skimmed milk 100ml double cream 2 eggs 1 spoonful of granulated sugar Method: deconstruct your gingerbread house, removing any…
