Eye-catching title huh? Today I need to share something with you. White bread is good for you. Fact.
I think we’ve all got used to the argument that white bread is bad for you. I remember when I was at Uni a friend constantly sang “The whiter the bread, the quicker you’re dead” at me. That really stuck with me and I’ve been buying brown and wholemeal bread ever since. The odd loaf of white bread has snuck in, as we all know just how delicious it is toasted and dripping with butter.
Today I was invited to the launch of The Slice of Life campaign, which was created by the Federation of Bakers and the Flour Advisory Bureau. Lisa Faulkner, the celebrity cook was there to demo an easy, family-friendly recipe using white bread, as well as nutritionist Amanda Ursell.
White bread is full of good things our bodies need and is a great source of fibre, folic acid and calcium. An average slice of bread contains around 80 calories. Starchy foods (such as bread, potatoes or pasta) should make up a third of what we eat – so don’t miss it out!
Lisa Faulkner is a great ambassador for the campaign. I was already a huge fan of her recipes (rice krispie chicken being a firm family favourite!). Today she did a quick demo showing us how to make Summer Pudding in the kitchen at The Good Housekeeping Institute. I love Summer Pudding so this will definitely be one recipe I try at home, as well as encouraging everyone to eat more white bread.
