Simple sewing machine cover

Posted on June 11, 2015June 29, 2015 by jenny

I’ve had my Janone sewing machine for a couple of years now. I prefer to hand sew but often use my machine to finish off larger projects, especially my quilts. My sewing machine had a rather nasty plastic dust cover and I wanted to make something prettier to keep it clean.

A couple of weeks ago I read about a fun competition where you could choose a piece of fabric and make anything you liked and I thought this was a great opportunity to make myself a new sewing machine cover.

There were four fabrics from Hillary’s Roman blinds and curtains collection to choose from and I picked Daisy Pistachio as it really reminded me of Orla Kiely’s striped petal print and you all know I’m a huge fan of Orla Kiely. The fabric is a lovely and features small-scale geometric detailing, for a contemporary twist on traditional floral schemes.

I wanted to make a simple sewing machine cover so made a rectangle, long enough to cover both sides of my machine. I measured my sewing machine and added a couple of centimetres for the seam allowance. The fabric frayed quite a lot when cut but the seams contained any loose pieces of fabric.

making a sewing machine coverI added cotton tape ties to ensure the cover stayed in place when not in use.

I’m really pleased with my little cover and it adds a splash of colour to my sewing corner. There’s plenty of  fabric left over to make some cushions and perhaps a matching cable tidy too.

This is my entry to Hillary’s Craft Competition.

Love this, such a simple idea and great for a beginner to make…. I think Orla Kiely might have something to say about that fabric design though!

Lovely idea, love the ribbon. Mine always gets so dusty so a cover is fab!

    Good luck!
