Crafts for kids Elf on the Shelf

Festive Elf painted rocks

Festive Elf painted rocks

This year we have been having lots of fun with our Elf on the Shelf. My children still believe in their magic and we love finding something for them to do each day. So far this festive season the elves have been cutting snowflakes out of toilet roll, helping my daughter with her epic jigsaw puzzle, leaving notes in the children’s lunch boxes and setting up a rock painting station. We love making painted rocks so thought this was a great opportunity to create some new festive elf painted rocks.

We used:

Bag of smooth pebbles or rocks

Selection of posca pens

Varnish to seal the painted rocks (we use Wilko Gloss Yacht Varnish)

We have two house elves so I based the first rock on one of them. I drew it on in pencil before using the Posca pens to add colour. I left this out with the elf, along with a few bare rocks and the pens for the children to discover. They loved seeing that one of them had made a rock and couldn’t wait to try making their own.

The children both made different rocks, the 9 year old drew Buddy and Fred, our two elves, whilst his younger sister drew a red elf. She just loves drawing elves at the moment!

They added colour using the pens, and I made a few with them – a North Pole Rocks one and another elf face.

I seal our rocks with Wilko Gloss Yacht Varnish, this takes about 24 hours to dry but gives the rocks a really lovely shine. We made sure to add our local hashtag so we can hide them around our local library. Hopefully they will get found and bring some festive cheer!

I’ve seen painted rocks hidden around where we live. I love your festive ones, such a fun idea!

These look so festive! Jack’s always finding painted rocks in our village, we haven’t found any festive ones yet unfortunately.
