Orla Kiely inspired stool

painting with Annie Sloan

I’ve been needing to inject a bit more colour into our living room. I had some Orla Kiely wrapping paper left over and thought it would be perfect for updating our little stool. A while ago I painted it with a Miffy face but it’s been looking a little sad, definitely in need of some TLC.

I gathered my supplies: Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Emperor’s Silk and a paint brush.

I love using Chalk Paints as you don’t need to do any prep! I simply covered the legs and underneath of the stool in two coats of paint and left it to dry.

The red is a really gorgeous, vibrant colour. I picked it to match one of the colours in my favourite Orla Kiely stem print. I have a few jars of Chalk Paint but the red is one of my favourites and gets used a lot. It also seems to last for ages 🙂

When the paint was dry I turned the stool upside down and placed it on top of the wrong side of my paper. I drew around the stool with a pencil and cut out my circle. I applied some Mod Podge to the top of the stool and gently placed the paper on top. It dried perfectly. I trimmed any edges which were slightly too large with my Swann Morton scalpel and gave the legs a light wax with some Annie Sloan clear wax.

I love the finished result. It provides some much needed colour in our living room.
