days out Family Life

Saving money on days out over the holidays {kids eat free at Subway!}

I love the Easter holidays. Christmas is but a distant memory and we’re all enjoying the longer days despite the relentless rain. I know that we traditionally have bad weather over a Bank Holiday but please, we could really do with some dry days! Subway challenged us to enjoy a day out over the holidays without spending any money. Subway have a fab deal where Kids Eat Free with a purchase of an adult meal (find your nearest branch here), so Little Sis and I planned a girls day out with lunch to see if it was possible to not spend any money. We shared some of our fun over on our Insta stories if you follow us there.

Hiding painted rocks

Our first stop of our day out was to our local park to hide some of our latest painted rocks. I’ve mentioned before that we love taking part in the Kindness Rocks movement. Basically it involves painting or decorating smooth pebbles and hiding them for people to find. We add our local # on the back of each painted rock, and always make sure we seal and varnish them given our terrible British weather!

We’ve picked up a few painted rocks lately so we were keen to re-hide them, as well as hide a few of our own creations. Little Sis loved climbing the trees at the park and ran around for ages. We looked for rocks but couldn’t find any. Instead we hid our own – I really hope someone finds them soon!

Visiting the library

Then it was off to visit our local library. Both my children love the library, stocking up on books to read. A story time session was on but that didn’t stop us finding lots of animal books which are her current favourite thing to read. We came away with so many books about unicorns and otters 🙂

Lunch at Subway

I had booked a kids craft session at Hobbycraft after lunch (our only expense!) so we hopped on the tube and visited Subway for lunch. Between 29th March – 17th April 2018 in participating Subway stores you can treat yourself to a Six-inch meal deal, and you’ll receive a Kids’ Pak entirely free!

Each Kids’ Pak is 2 of your child’s 5-a- day. Every Kids’ Pak Sub is low fat, low in saturated fat and low in sugars, as well as being a source of protein. Little Sis opted for the mini ham sub, Robinsons’ Fruit Shoot and Bear Yo Yo. She was able to choose her own salad which I thought was a nice touch, she filled hers with tomato and cucumber slices. I had the Chicken Pizziola six inch sub meal which included a drink and a bag of crisps, although I could have swapped that for a cookie. I was also able to choose which salad I wanted in my sub, and had it warm as it was such a cold day.

Little Sis received the new SEA LIFE Kids’ Pak which included one of four SEA LIFE collectibles. She got the Build your own Coral Reef which is the perfect crafty activity for her. We were also given a voucher giving 50% off access to SEA LIFE centres across the UK & Ireland, for a family of four.

Making slime at Hobbycraft

Fuelled by a delicious lunch our final stop was Hobbycraft. My daughter loves to craft and we’ve had a few attempts at making slime at home. I saw a slime making session advertised and knew she would love it. It only cost £1 which I thought was well worth it. She was given a glass jar and step by step instructions on what ingredients to add to make slime. She was able to choose a paint colour and some glitter too and made the prettiest slime. She had so much fun mixing it with her hands and was even able to take it home in a pot to play with again.

We had a lovely day out. I love both children but I also really value the time I get to spend with them on their own. I think she had a great day out too and it was a relief to not spend too much money. Lunch can often be a huge expense but we really saved at Subway and had a filling lunch too. I can’t wait to take advantage of the deal again and go back with the whole family over the holidays. The Kids Eat Free deal runs until 17th April at participating stores in England, Wales and Scotland.

Disclosure – this is a paid collaboration with Subway but all thoughts are our own.

    What great ideas for inexpensive things to do with the kids! Thanks for the heads up about the Subway deal – my kids LOVE going there. I read about kindness rocks on your blog before and it’s firmly on our to do list.
