Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Food {book review}

Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Food

During the Summer holidays we were gifted a copy of Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Food by Angela Nguyen. I love to try new things and quite fancied trying my hand at kawaii. Have you heard of the word kawaii before? It is Japanese for ‘cute’ and covers everything from food to clothes and toys.

I thought I would get a chance to look through this book and try out some of the projects for myself. Sadly my 9 year old took the book as soon as he saw it! My son just loves to draw and learn new things so he set himself up at the table with the book, his favourite coloured pencils and plenty of paper.

The book is really well set out with step-by-step instructions and minimal text. It’s great for both visual learners and those interested in learning the essential techniques of kawaii. My son loved reading the book and was soon drawing away.

Artist-author Angela Nguyen turns even the most mundane foods into living, breathing, adorable characters that you will want to draw yourself. As well as cute food-creature fusions such as blueberry kittens and sausage dog hotdogs, there are sleeping cats who lounge atop sushi, curl inside donuts, or peek out from pizza crusts. There are chapters on appetizers, entrees, desserts, snacks and drinks.

It’s a lovely book and my son has covered the house with his drawings. I’ve even had a go too and it’s fun to see how the characters are created.

Kawaii: How to Draw Really Cute Food – Draw Adorable Animal Food Art in the Cutest Style Ever! by Angela Nguyen is published by Search Press.
