We were invited to take part in a little challenge to find the best budget travel gadgets for 2013, called ‘Inspect-A-Gadget’. We’re a family who love our gadgets so I couldn’t resist. Over the last couple of weeks we’re been using an Android Tablet.
I have to admit that my husband and I both have iPhones and iPads (he has the big one, I have the small) and Macs. Like I say, we LOVE being connected and whenever we go away checking we have packed the necessary power cables is top of our list.
Back to the challenge. Moneysupermarket.com wanted to see if cheaper gadgets, like e-readers, tablets and cameras, can live up to their more expensive counterparts to show that you don’t need to spend a fortune on technology for your holiday.
In case you’re interested in the nitty gritty, we ordered a 7″ inch Touch Screen Allwinner A13 1.0GHz CPU Android 4.0 Tablet PC 4GB HDD 512MB WiFi, in a purple case. It arrived and we’ve been using it ever since. My husband is a bit more familiar with the Android operating system than I am so he set it all up but it didn’t take long. As soon as the toddler saw it he basically claimed it as his and has been asking for his “iPad” ever since. It’s got gmail inbuilt and WiFi for internet access, we were also able to add apps using Google play so added the toddlers favourites, as well as the ones we like to use daily (Twitter, Facebook, etc).
We paid £36 for the Tablet which is an amazing price. It works pretty well although it’s a little slow to use, the screen resolution is low, as is the front facing camera. We’ve used a micro SD card to add memory as the OS takes up so much space.
I can only compare it with an iPad and obviously it’s at the other end of the scale in terms of price and technology. However, it’s keeping my toddler very happy, gets me my iPad back, and is so small he’ll be packing it to take away over the Bank Holiday weekend.
