How to make your own Squishy Popcorn

How to make your own Squishy Popcorn

Posted on July 13, 2018 by jenny

Last month we reviewed the fabulous How to make your own Squishies & Slime magbook. It’s a brilliant book for crafty kids with over 50 DIY projects to squish, squash, smoosh and stretch. Both my kids love squishies, especially the smaller ones they got from Squishy Box. Our family love to craft so it was inevitable that we would make some of the squishies from the magbook.

The children chose several they wanted to make and the first one was popcorn. It wasn’t hard to find the right supplies. We bought large sponges from Halfords and a variety of puffy paints.

My daughter really wanted to make the popcorn so drew the outline onto the sponge.

I carefully cut out the sponge, leaving the top a little rough to look like popcorn. Then my daughter painted the sponge with white acrylic paint.

Once it had been covered in white paint and dried thoroughly she started to add more detail with the puffy paint. We had never used puffy paint before but she found it easy to squeeze out.

Then she used a brush to spread the paint out, creating stripes on the popcorn box.

She added yellow paint around the top of the popcorn box and then added a smiley face to bring her squishy to life. The instructions in How to make your own Squishies & Slime were really easy to follow which made this a great craft activity for her. Even though the paint dried hard the sponge is still squishy and has pride of place in her bedroom.

We loved creating our own squishy and used the same instructions to make different shapes too.

What do you think? Would you ever make your own squishy?

This is a great idea. my daughter keeps asking for squishy’s but they cost so much. I did not think of a DIY one.
