We’ve carved our pumpkins but they’re already beginning to look a little rough around the edges. This year my 5 year old made a little instruction booklet for my husband, each page has a different step in how to carve a pumpkin, which we both thought was very sweet. My 5 year old insisted on carving a Creeper face into his pumpkin as he’s a huge Minecraft fan.
I wanted to make something a little simpler and which lasts a lot longer so I made some sweet fabric pumpkins. They are really simple to make and you can make a few in an evening.
You will need:
orange cotton fabric
green felt
small stick
basic sewing kit
stuffing
How to make fabric pumpkins:
Cut a piece of orange fabric approximately 30 x 15cm.
Fold short side to short side, if you’re using patterned fabric make sure the fabric has the right sides facing each other and sew. I used my machine but you could do this by hand.
Sew along one long edge with running stitch.
Then pull the thread to bunch up the fabric, secure with a few extra stitches.
Turn your pumpkin inside out and stuff.
Place a small stick inside with the top poking out and sew a running stitch along the remaining edge of the fabric. Pull the thread tight and secure in place with a couple of stitches.
Choose a contrasting colour of thread or piece of Bakers twine and wrap around your pumpkin, pull tightly to give your pumpkin shape, knot underneath where you can’t see it.
Cut and stitch a couple of felt leaves to hide any stitches around your pumpkin stalk. When you’ve mastered a basic pumpkin you can experiment with different shapes and fabrics to create your very own fabric pumpkin patch.

October 29, 2015 at 8:31 amI love the idea of making a fabric pumpkin, I hate food waste and carving a pumpkin and not using the flesh doesn’t sit right with me as it’s incredibly wasteful. This is a great alternative.
