Garden ABC letter hunt

Garden ABC letter hunt (A-Z Play at Home)

Posted on June 16, 2017October 19, 2023 by jenny

The weather is warming up nicely which means we have been spending plenty of time in the garden. Every week we take part in the A-Z Play at Home series, this is all about simple play and learning ideas inspired by the every day items we have in our homes.

The letter G inspired us to get outside and enjoy the garden with an impromptu ABC letter hunt. This was so simple to set up but kept my children occupied after school for ages.

Garden ABC letter hunt

We used our lovely garden and a set of alphabetical letter we’ve had for a while. They are actually fridge magnets but you could easily use any letter card or similar from games.

First of all I hid all 26 letters around the garden. I placed them around the trampoline, mud kitchen and amongst flower pots. I wanted them to be seen if you stood looking around the garden.

Then my children took it in turns to go and look for the letters. It was a really hot day but they enjoyed being outside on their treasure hunt.

When one of them had found everything I hid the letters again, this time in different places and slightly higher up to make it harder for my 7 year old.

When they had both had a go they decided to hide the letters for each other. I could hear them running through the alphabet to make sure they had found all 26 letters each time so this doubles up as a great way to learn the alphabet!

Oh I love the idea of this game so much. It will be lots of fun and a great way to learn too. The weather has been gorgeous recently, it’s so nice the kids can finally get out enjoying it.

This sounds like a fab game and a great way for your littlies to learn their alphabet. I might steal the idea to use at my school!

This is such a fun and easy way to get the kids outside, entertained and keeping it simple. Both my boys love a treasure hunt and this one is educational – win win all-round
