AD – I was kindly sent The Ultimate Folk Art Painting Masterclass from You Can Folk It to review at home
A few weeks ago now I was offered The Ultimate Folk Art Painting Masterclass to try at home. My sister bought one of these kits from The Handmade Fair a few years ago and I loved the results. According to Wikipedia, Folk art covers all forms of visual art made in the context of folk culture. Definitions vary, but generally the objects have practical utility of some kind, rather than being exclusively decorative.
Folk Art with You Can Folk It
The Masterclass for beginners will first teach you the basic brush strokes of Folk Art Painting which you will practice so you are able to create beautiful designs. Learning these brush strokes is like learning to write the letters of the alphabet for the first time.
Each brush stroke has its own very important but simple technique. This can be from the way you hold the brush, how you apply paint onto the brush and how you apply pressure to create beautiful brushstrokes. The main focus of the Masterclass is to teach you in an easy to follow and step by step way, making your Folk Art Painting experience enjoyable and stress free.
The Masterclass for beginners kit
I received The Masterclass for beginners kit which included a 34 Page Workbook (including 13 lessons), Online Classroom Access (including 13 lessons) as well as an Art Supplies Pack (including brushes, tools, paints & papers).
I couldn’t wait to start the Online Classroom Access and found this a great way to work through the 34 Page Workbook.
I was able to watch all the videos then go back to re-watch the ones I wanted to as I worked my way through the workbook. I learned all about Hinderloopen Florals, Daisies, Stroke Heart, Ribbons, Comma Stroke, Topiary and Wreath and Pivot Stroke Designs.
It felt like quite a fun way to try the different techniques. Before I knew it I was ready to try one of the projects, transferring the design I had chosen on to a blank. I really loved the lace technique and wanted to try it on a coaster.
I found the videos helpful and followed the different steps to transfer the design on to transfer paper, before using the special paper to transfer the basic design on to the black coaster.
Then I started filling in the design using white paint. I rubbed out any unwanted transfer lines with a rubber.
I thought it wasn’t too bad for a first attempt. I can see how you can perfect your technique with practice. The lace design is quite delicate and my strokes felt really heavy handed.
I’m really looking forward to having my Mondays off again so I can perfect my technique and try some of the other projects which came with The Masterclass for beginners kit.
The Masterclass for beginners kit which included The Masterclass for beginners kit, a 34 Page Workbook, Online Classroom Access and Art Supplies Pack costs £65, and there are other kits available from the Folk Kit! website.

September 7, 2020 at 4:12 pmYou did a pretty good job! What a great way to learn drawing techniques without having to go to art class – a bit of an impossibility at the moment as we know. Lovely gift for someone who is artsy /crafty too.
