I do so love being sent craft books to review and was lucky to receive a copy of folk art needlecraft – 35 step-by-step projects using traditional motifs from across the globe by Clare Youngs.
I have recently been trying to improve my limited knowledge of stitches so this book arrived at a great time for me. It is full of lovely inspiring projects for the home, children and gifts, all of which can be completed in a couple of evenings.
Some of the projects really appealed to me and have been added to my Day Zero craft list! I love the striking design of the Hamsa zipped purse. The hamsa, or hand design, is a universal symbol of protection used the world over and the book includes a detailed stitch guide to recreate the design, as well as all the templates for each project at the back of the book.
The projects take inspiration from all over the world and I loved the design of the traditional Hungarian embroidery on the make-up bag (which will help me master making a zipped and lined purse on my new Janome), the appliqued round pillow inspired by traditional Uzbekistan textiles, a hand-tied quilt inspired by vintage Indian saris and the over-sized cross stitch on a tablecloth for everyday use. Plenty of inspiration to keep me going for a long time!

The hamsa looks really cool! I have never tried needlecraft as I have just assumed I will be bad at it but the pictures look tempting – so cute!
