I love Ella’s Notes from Home and have previously joined in a couple of times. This week’s prompt really made me think: Five things you want your children to know about you. Did I really exist before Edward came along? Sometimes it’s hard to remember!
1 I did exist before you came along. I’m more than a mummy, I’m more than a wife, daughter, sister, auntie, friend. Sometimes I struggle to remember who I once was. I’d love to be more than a label and am working hard to forge my own identity.
2 I have dreams but they’ve changed. Never be afraid to try and follow yours. It’s better to have tried and gone in another direction than never tried and regretted it.
3 I used to love classical music and whilst at school played the piano, clarinet, cello and bassoon. I received money from The Princes’ Trust to purchase my own bassoon and gained a scholarship which paid for lessons as I wanted to be a musician. I went to Uni, studied history and never looked back.
4 I’ve always been rubbish at sports, always picked last for the team. I dabbled with hockey, netball and lacrosse but always believed they were a form of torture. I will happily back any child of mine who wants to skive off games as long as you’re happy to come for long Sunday walks with me.
5 Don’t be afraid to be different. At school I had an asymmetrical haircut. I went to University at the other end of the country. Don’t feel you have to follow the crowd. People admire someone who follows their own path.

February 28, 2011 at 2:45 pmI love your list. It’s especially nice to read Number 4, I always tell my children they don’t have to do things they hate (for me, it was sports too and I remember that feeling of being forced to do something I loathed. Lacrosse is a terrible game!) so long as they do something else to compensate x
