Mothers Day craft for kids

Fingerprint flower bag for a kid-made Mother’s Day gift

Posted on February 27, 2018February 28, 2018 by jenny

This is a busy time of year. Following a long Winter we now seem to have lots of special days to enjoy. We’ve already made a start on our handmade Mother’s Day cards and after school today we had fun with a fingerprint craft for a kid-made Mother’s Day gift. Let me tell you more about it.

You will need:
blank canvas bag
Selection of paints

We have been having a lot of fun with fingerprint crafts lately. We’ve made fingerprint heart keepsakes for Valentine’s Day and fingerprint St Patrick’s Day shamrock decorations. My children love using their fingers to paint and enjoyed getting messy again for this Mother’s Day craft.

We had two little cotton bags for a while, I think they were from Hobbycraft. I wasn’t too sure what to do with them, until I realised the children could decorate them. We haven’t made many Mother’s Day crafts, except for our hand print lilies, so they were excited to try something new.

They grabbed paint brushes, a paint tray and a selection of paints. They decided what colours they wanted to use and both started by painting a stem on to their bags. I should mention that first of all I placed a sheet of card inside each bag, just in case the paint went through both layers(which it did).

They both wanted to paint different flowers. My son opted for bluebells whilst my daughter made a colourful flower. You may notice that my crazy kids are dressed up as Where’s Wally?! They were practicing for World Book Day 🙂

They both used their fingers to create the flower petals.

When they had finished adding all the details we left the bags to dry. They’re going to add messages with fabric pens, then we can fill them with gifts and give them on Mother’s Day.

Let me know if you try this!

what type of paint did you use so that it would not wash off the tote bag?

I’m sorry it was so long ago I can’t remember! It would have been child-friendly paint though.

Great idea! Thanks for sharing. Did you seal the paint with anything?
