Earlier this year my son and I enjoyed a day out in London. Before we went and watched Back To The Future The Musical (you can read our review here) we visited The London Mithraeum. The London Mithraeum is a Roman Temple of Mithras which was found in the city of London. It’s free to visit and a great place to visit with kids to learn more about Roman London.
Exploring The London Mithraeum with kids
You can pre-book a ticket to visit the London Mithraeum or just turn up and take a chance. A visit takes about an hour and is free. We decided to pre-book and turned up at our time slot. We entered the building at ground level and saw a huge modern art installation. Behind that was an intriguing wall of finds from the site.
My son was delighted to pick up a tablet to explore the objects.
Our favourite was this beautiful Roman leather shoe which had been beautifully preserved.
After we had learned a little more about the site, my son took an activity leaflet and we headed down the stairs to the next level. There was a timeline down the stairs where we could learn more about the history of London and the site. Downstairs were some objects, such as the head of a statue of Mithras and some interactives.
Then it was time to head downstairs again to the Mithraeum. We entered the room and stood to one side before lights and sounds transported us back to Roman times.
The Roman temple to Mithras was discovered in 1954 during excavations of a Second World War bomb site, prior to the construction of a new office building. The remains were displayed until the office was demolished, and then re-built where it was originally discovered ad re-opened asĀ London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE.
It’s a really fascinating space to visit and well worth a trip if you are looking for something a little different to do in London.

November 14, 2022 at 10:56 amI read about this place a while ago in a history book, but I hadn’t realised it was possible to visit. One for my list next time I’m in London.
