Dear Zoo Story Stones

“I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet. So they sent me an ….” Thus begins our favourite book! It’s a children’s picture book classic and a very respectable 35 years old. It seems a very long time ago since I took a very young Big Brother and Little Sis off to Macmillan Children’s Book for a lovely Dear Zoo party and to meet Rod Campbell.

We love any book by Rod Campbell and have a much-loved copy of Dear Zoo which has been signed by him. As well as our classic copy of Dear Zoo we also have a lovely copy of Dear Zoo Touch and Feel which Little Sis still has by her bed. They have been reading Dear Zoo in her Year 1 class so it was great to re-visit the story and make a set of Dear Zoo Story Stones to help re-tell the story.

We’re a huge fan of Story Stones, they are such a simple craft activity and a great way for children to re-tell stories. We’ve made a few Story Stones before, they are quick and easy and something the children can make. So far we’ve made them for Star Wars, Nativity ones which are perfect for Christmas time, as well as the Gruffalo and the Gingerbread Man – we do love our classic stories!

Dear Zoo Story Stones

It was so simple to make our Dear Zoo Story Stones. We used smooth stones, Mod Podge, a paint brush and the Dear Zoo Colouring Sheet from the Dear Zoo & Friends website.

The only tricky part was re-sizing the images to make them fit the stones. I played around until I got them the right size, then cut each one out.

The children then glued them on to the stones using the Mod Podge. Carefully applying a layer of Mod Podge on each stone, placing the cut out on, then another layer of Mod Podge over the image.

The story stones didn’t take long to dry and then we were able to use them to tell our version of Dear Zoo. Of course the story got told lots of different ways too! Both children picked their favourites and told their own stories.
