Coping with reflux

Posted on December 28, 2011 by jenny

Little Sis is now one month old and we all totally love her. Big Brother constantly holds his arms out towards her when he wants to give her a cuddle and spends hours looking at her and giggling or giving her a kiss on her head. His behaviour, for the most part, is lovely and makes us both happy he has adjusted so well to his new role. He has the odd moment when he doesn’t understand that I can’t stop feeding her to get down on the floor and play but it’s great being a family of four.

Unfortunately Little Sis caught her brothers’ cough and cold and it’s been heartbreaking seeing her sneeze and cough. She also has really bad reflux, often projectile vomiting an entire bottle back over me. It all seems to have come to a head over the last few days and I’ve felt quite down and alone. I haven’t seen a midwife or health visitor since she was 2 weeks old and have not been able to reach anyone by phone. I’ve literally been counting down the days until people are back at work and I can see the Doctor or health visitor for a chat.

I’ve been googling reflux but don’t want to switch formula without advice. I remember switching Big Brother to a hungry baby formula when he was a couple of weeks old as he was so hungry but I seem to have lost confidence in my parenting skills with Little Sis. She’s smaller than her brother and, with the lack of medical appointments, I’m just not sure if she’s gaining weight correctly.

However, today I managed to see a lovely Doctor who prescribed infant gaviscon. We have another appointment for a weeks time and if there’s no improvement we’ll be referred to a paediatrician. I also contacted the Health Visitor so should be receiving a visit from them soon. I have lots of questions so am looking forward to getting some advice!

I know it’s really hard at the start especially with the hormones etc but I am sure you are doing a fantastic job! My son had problems from day 1 and I thought it was all my fault – it wasn’t. As a mum your instincts are right! If I had listened more to me he probably wouldn’t of ended up with 4 years of issues (my son couldn’t breast feed so got dehydrated on the 1st day). Due to this all sorts of other problems started and he had toilet phobia. When he couldn’t breast feed I wanted to bottle feed him but was told to stop being silly and get on with breast feeding.

When Aaron was like that I switched him to Cow & Gate Infasoy which is dairy free – I did it without medical advice from anyone and he never ever suffered colic or reflux again.
We’re not actually designed to digest cow’s proteins or milk.
Also his eczema nearly disappeared within days of the switch.
He was around 4 weeks old when I did it.

My daughter had severe acid reflux and wasn’t diagnosed until she was 5 and a half months (the doctors wouldn’t listen to me). She is cows milk intolerant and was put on Pepti Junior. No medication helped her, just the milk change. She occasionally gets reflux when she is teething but not as bad as she had when she was on the wrong milk apart from that she is a very happy nearly two year old who is on Alpro Junior milk. If you need any support/advice etc then I am @charliechinuk on Twitter. Hugs x
