The Great British Bake Off (iPhone app review)!

I’ve always loved baking but The Great British Bake Off has really encouraged me to be a bit more adventurous with my baking. I still have baking disasters (too many to mention) but I love baking and seeing people enjoy what I’ve made. The new series of The Great British Bake Off aired this week and a new iPhone app is available to download for the first time (priced £2.99). The app contains fifty fabulous recipes to whip up at home and are all based on The Great British Bake Off books published by BBC Books in conjunction with Love…

Brilliant biscuits for the Diamond Jubilee

It’s been a while since I’ve come across any gingerbread biscuits worth writing about it. Whilst we were away in Devon we went to as Asda which was quite exciting as there are none near us in London. I was buying some snacks for our loong car journey home and found a box of gingerbread bites. The full name was Let’s Celebrate with 14 Gingerbread Bites and the biscuits were in the shape of a union flag – we’ve just finished them off whilst watching the Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant. We all really enjoyed the biscuits which had a lovely…

Gingerbread house finds – vintage gingerbread cutter

Did you know today was World Baking Day? World Baking Day is all about sharing the joy of baking cakes, and what better way to share the love than #caking! I have been very busy baking but I wanted to share this vintage Nutbrown Party Time Cutter Gingerbread Man. I love the original packaging which proudly says “For use in making super Gingerbread Biscuits, highly popular with young people”. Eek, that makes me feel old! The cutter was made in England by Thos. M. Nutbrown Ltd and the cover shows a freaky gingerbread man with scary eyes, buttons and belt…

    Recipe for lebkuchen

Lebkuchen is a traditional German baked Christmas treat, similar to gingerbread. I’d never tried it before but as the ingredients were so similar to gingerbread I thought I would like it. After a couple of attempts I have perfected my recipe – the spices balance the black treacle perfectly – which makes 20 biscuits. Recipe for lebkuchen   Ingredients: 400g self-raising flour 115g unsalted butter 115g light muscovado sugar 1 egg 400g black treacle 1tsp ground ginger 0.5tsp ground cloves 0.25 tsp chilli powder Method: Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl, beat in the egg and black…

    Treats for your Jubilee party

Have you noticed that there are an increasing amount of special Jubilee limited editions food products? I felt compelled to purchase a few of my favourite brands and must admit I’ve even been keeping the wrappers for the children’s memory boxes! The Jubilee and Olympics are big events in their little lives and even though they are too young to remember, I want them to have some unusual souvenirs to look back on. There are no official branded jubilee products, and products are not allowed to feature pictures of the Queen. So, as well as the commemorative stamps and special…

Day Zero – Month 19 (April)

On the 19 September 2010 I started a Day Zero list: a place to record your goals, discover new challenges, and gain motivation to achieve them. I have a list of 100 things I want to do over 1001 days. The list is due to be competed by 16 June 2013. Life with two children is hard. I knew it would be but it’s really hard and I don’t seem to have much time for much besides looking after children. There are also lots of fun times though and I’m never happier than when we’re all snuggled up in bed…

    Gingerbread and butter pudding

Not sure what to do with that lovingly created gingerbread house? Why not make it into a tasty gingerbread and butter pudding? My romantic Valentine-themed gingerbread house needed to make room for my Easter-themed gingerbread house but I didn’t want to throw it away. The gingerbread was quite thin so I thought it might make a delicious gingerbread and butter pudding. Here’s what I did. You need: a gingerbread house, deconstructed a couple of slices of bread, buttered 1/2 pint of skimmed milk 100ml double cream 2 eggs 1 spoonful of granulated sugar Method: deconstruct your gingerbread house, removing any…

    Daffodil biscuits for spring

The sun is shining so I thought I would make some daffodil inspired biscuits. Daffodil biscuits for spring I baked simple biscuits using a gingerbread kit from Morrisons. The kit contains a gingerbread mix with a cutter, a tube of white icing, a sachet of golden syrup and raisins, so all you need to provide is butter and 2tsp of water. The mix made a satisfying dough which came together really easily and smelled lovely. The golden syrup made it quite sticky so I used plenty of flour when rolling out the dough. Instead of using the enclosed cutter I…
