I love Autumn and I’m happy that I seem to have passed on a love of seasons to my children too. They have really embraced Autumn this year. My 3 year old can’t walk past a leaf or acorn without picking it up and my freezer is full of little bags of acorns after I found a little maggot crawling out of one!
Last month we went to our first proper Apple Day event, held at Hughenden Manor, our local National Trust place. Did you know that 21st October 2015 marked the 25th anniversary of Apple Day – first initiated by UK charity Common Ground to celebrate the richness and diversity of our local farming.
Apple Day is now celebrated across the UK in Apple Day and weekend events, from apple games in a garden to village fairs that showcase many hundreds of apple varieties.

To celebrate Apple Day, why not make your own apple pigs?
Apple Pigs, by Ruth Gary Orbach and published by the National Trust, is a timeless classic, loved by a generation. This beautifully illustrated tale of an apple tree that grows too many apples is delightfully told in rhyme.
A little girl finds a withered apple tree surrounded by rubbish. To stop the tree being chopped down for firewood, she clears the rubbish to help the poor tree grow. When Spring arrives, the tree bursts into blossom nad produces a glut of apples. But as the little girl’s family try to eat, cook and hide the apples in rugs, blankets, wagons and jugs, the apples continue to grow!
There is only one answer – an apple feast!
Perfect to celebrate apple day, the book even includes a guide to making your own apple pig – a fruit sculpture that looks just like a pig!
