The Olympics are such a big event that I really want to make sure we experience as much as we can living in London. Yes, we have tickets for some events, if the tickets ever turn up, but there are plenty of other things we can do too.
Today we ventured into London to spend some time at one of our favourite playgrounds – Coram’s Fields. It’s only a short walk from Kings Cross so it’s perfect little day trip if we want to leave Zone 3 for a couple of hours.
Whilst we were out we went train spotting at Kings Cross Station and for once I was thankful that I wasn’t one of those people rushing off a train onto the Underground to get to the office. It was lovely being able to stop and appreciate the building and the lovely weather and lots of people smiled when they saw how excited the toddler was to see the big trains.
After our visit to Coram’s Fields we walked back to the Kings Cross via St Pancras and we went to look at the giant Olympic rings which currently hang there.
We looked round the shops, ok so that bit of our trip was definitely for me, and I bought an Olympic scrapbook from Cath Kidston. I thought it would be fun to keep a scrapbook alongside the souvenirs we’ve already bought. Not quite sure what I’ll fill the pages with but hopefully we’ll find something!
I also bought the London 2012 Olympic Games The Official Guide from the official 2012 shop at St Pancras so we can learn more about each sport and some of the athletes. I’ve already learned lots of fascinating Olympic facts to wow family and friends!
On our way home we stopped to admire the temporary Olympic banners which have been hung throughout our Borough. Apparently they bear the Olympic logo although the ones I spotted today all looked quite random. I don’t think they are much to look at and I can’t understand why LOCOG and the GLA would want to give Haringey £50,000 to hang some banners up. I don’t think any amount of banners would make our bit of London look better but at least it feels like we’re part of the Olympics in spirit.
There’s more than one but they are spaced quite far apart -£50,000 obviously doesn’t buy many banners.
I’m not sure if any local venues are being used for sport but my favourite local building, Ally Pally, is being transformed into the official home of the Dutch team during the Olympic Games and will temporarily be known as Holland Heineken House!
