In a desperate attempt to tidy the lounge I’ve been looking at my craft stash. Despite all my posts about parenting I spend a lot of time sewing which I never get a chance to blog about. For a long time my monthly indulgence has been Mollie Makes for the beautiful photography, inspiration and patterns. Who can forget my favourite ever pattern for felt biscuits?
The paper copies do take up a lot of room but the cover gifts always tempt me to buy them, rather than the sensible digital copy which takes up no space. Looking through my collection I have every issue since it launched – that’s a lot of cover gifts which have never been opened. It makes me feel like a bit like my toddler who always looks at the attractive magazines, cleverly placed at pushchair height, who whines until I buy them for him.
I used to be a sucker for celeb magazines, preferring them to a book on my daily commute. Since becoming a penniless stay at home mum I’ve weaned myself off all magazines, all except Mollie Makes. However I find I often treat it as the quick fix of the trashy mags I used to buy. A 10 min speed read whilst the children are absorbed in cBeebies and I’ve power read it, absorbed some eye candy and made a mental note of new blogs to check out. Is that worth £4.99 a month? Perhaps that’s the price of my ‘me’ time.
I did get a bit fed up of spending so much money so managed to not buy the last couple of issues. The theme of hands holding a handmade something on the cover was also beginning to nauseate me slightly. However, I found myself looking at the lastest issue yesterday and couldn’t help buying it. The free gift was a crochet hook and I soooo want to learn how to crochet, especially the cute crochet trim in the latest issue of Mollie Makes taken from Eline Pellinkhof’s new book.
The first 12 issues have been sitting patiently in a corner of the lounge for the last 4 months waiting to be put on eBay. Hopefully I will be able to sell a couple of them as they are all in mint condition, then I can use the money to buy some wool and find some time to learn to crochet!
What’s your guilty secret? It has to be more interesting than expensive magazine eye candy 🙂
