Hand print painting!

Posted on February 3, 2012 by jenny

I love making personalised cards. We made our own wedding stationery, Christmas cards and announcement cards when both children were born. This year we wanted to make a ‘thank you for our Christmas card’ featuring both their hand prints so got out the paints…

We knew Big Brother had a limited attention span so got everything ready to make it as simple as possible. We bought ready made blank cards, envelopes and pots of paint. We put a dollop of paint on an old plate and used a sponge to paint on his hand, then put his hand firmly on the paper.

We used lots of different colours of paper which needed different paint and therefore cleaning up each time, but this over complicated things and I would recommend sticking to one colour if possible. BB really enjoyed himself and you can imagine the paint ended up everywhere!

We decided it was safer to wear minimal clothing!

After we had cleaned up BB we moved on to Little Sis. We thought she would be easier (and less excitable) but we were wrong. She didn’t like the sensation of paint on her hand which caused her to clench her fist. We decided to use her foot instead which was slightly easier to paint and print with.

The end result is lovely and will definitely make the grandparents and aunties smile. BB loved getting messy with the paints so I shall have to be brave and let him have more messy fun.

What a fun and cute idea. I think it’s lovely when parents have the children write thank you notes for their presents.

Many years ago (before Little Bean and Beanie Boy) we did the family hand prints on a blank canvas and put it up in our bathroom, then as Little Bean and Beanie Boy have come along we have added their hands to the canvas which still hangs in our bathroom, I can’t bear to take it down. But getting Beanie Boy’s hand print was a disaster as he reacted something like Lil Sis and so now we have a purple splodge where his hand should be so we might have to try again soon, he’s starting to enjoy messy play now. Love the idea for thank you cards, might have to give that a go myself 🙂
