We’ve all been there, scrolling through our social media feeds and feeling jealous of those stunning holiday pics being posted by our friends. But we can’t all afford to jet off to Iceland or Alicante. Especially not just to take some pictures!
Worry not, though, because you don’t have to jump on a plane to go get some awe-inspiring photographs to have your mutuals turning green with envy. The UK has plenty of beautiful spots to visit and capture for yourself, covering almost every type of scenery or backdrop you could ask for. So, rather than saving for a splurge abroad, why not consider cheap UK holidays and stay somewhere just as photographic yet a little closer to home instead?
Stunning seaside in Cornwall
From the rocky cliffs and coves of the north coast to the sandy beaches and subtropical gardens of the south coast, Cornwall has it all.
Tucked away at the far south-westerly point of Britain, it’s a region with a deep history and some truly unique vistas, perfect for the aspiring holiday photographer.
Capture the sun setting over the waves of the Atlantic Ocean or explore the weathered majesty of the iconic Cornish tin mines. From picturesque fishing villages to the variety of more than 300 beaches dotted along the coast of the peninsula, every corner of Cornwall emanates charm and reflects the county’s slower pace of life.
Gorgeous gardens in Sissinghurst
How about something a little more botanical? Throughout the UK there are dozens of stately homes and historical manors that feature some truly impressive landscaped grounds. And if the English garden was a good subject for the painters of old then it’s still just as good for the photographers of today.
One particularly photogenic and colourful example can be found at Sissinghurst Castle Garden. Designed by poet Vita Sackville-West and now in the care of the National Trust, the gardens feature various ‘rooms’ which each focus on a particular theme or colour scheme. Set up shots with a study of contrast in the vibrance of the Cottage Garden, or bask in the single-toned yet varied blooms of the White Garden.
Woodland wonders of the New Forest
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a less cultivated sort of flora then you can’t go wrong with visiting the New Forest. Located in the south of England, it comprises more than 200 square miles of ancient woodland, moors and heathland.
Largely unchanged from the time of William the Conqueror, these primordial woodlands provide the backdrop for pictures right out of a fantasy film, if you want to aim for that Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings vibe. You can even try your hand at some wildlife shots, as roughly 5,000 wild ponies roam the forest along with a range of deer, pigs and donkeys.
Awe-inspiring architecture in Bath
But what if you’re aiming for pictures that are a little less landscape-based in nature? If you’re in the mood to create architectural shots to rival those of Rome or New York then the UK still has you covered.
While metropolitan cities like London can offer you plenty of skyscrapers and postmodern buildings, to capture for something a little more classical and period then you can look to a break in Bath. Featuring Georgian squares and landmarks that form the backdrop of many Austen adaptations and the Roman Baths that give the city its name, Bath is the only city in the UK designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you don’t feel like spending all your time in town, though, you can always retreat to a nearby holiday park like Sandy Balls in Hampshire to enjoy some quieter nights.
All along the length of the country are a wide variety of locales that can make for holiday snaps just as impressive as anything from further afield. So don’t pine after distant shores, treat yourself to a cheap getaway in one of the UK’s many beauty spots and go get those perfect photos to make everyone else pause their scrolling in envy instead.
