Exploring Seaton tramway with kids and a dog

Exploring Seaton tramway with kids and a dog

Posted on September 4, 2023September 10, 2023 by jenny

Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to visit some of the beautiful places in the UK. This summer we spent a week exploring East Devon, especially the coastal villages of Lyme Regis and the surrounding areas. One place we really wanted to take the children was the Seaton tramway in Devon, this is a narrow gauge heritage tram which runs between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton in East Devon’s glorious Axe Valley, travelling alongside the River Axe.

We first visited Seaton tramway back in 2005 and it was really lovely to be back in such glorious weather. This time we decided to start our journey from Colyton so parked the car and bought tickets from the ticket office. We checked ahead that the dog was allowed to travel, and he was able to travel downstairs on the tram.

Trams are pretty special . Once they were everywhere but today they only exist in places such as Manchester and Croydon. We knew the children would enjoy the experience.

During the summer the trams are pretty frequent so we didn’t have to wait long for one. The journey takes about 25 minutes and stops at pretty stations and halts along the way. We decided to stay on until the end of the line and were greeted with a brand new tram shed.

We decided to explore Seaton and headed for the beach. There was lots to do and we found a lovely cafe for lunch and visited the shops.

Before we knew it, it was time to head back to Colyton. There was plenty of seating at the station so we waited and watched the trams come and go before we could get on one. The dog enjoyed the ride and when we arrived back at Colyton we stopped for refreshments in the station cafe.

We had a great journey on the tram and would love to stop off at some of the stations and explore them another time.

Wow it looks so pretty! And you had some great weather. This looks like it’d be a lot of fun for the whole family and I love that it’s dog friendly too!
