Did you know that World Bee Day is celebrated on 20th May? On this day Anton Janša, the pioneer of beekeeping, was born in 1734. Bees are flying insects known for their role in pollination and the production of honey. They belong to the order Hymenoptera, which also includes wasps and ants. Bees are closely related to wasps, but they have evolved unique characteristics and behaviours that set them apart.
There are thousands of bee species found worldwide, but the most well-known are honey bees (genus Apis) and bumblebees (genus Bombus). Honey bees are social insects that live in colonies with a complex social structure, while bumblebees are also social but have smaller colonies.
Here are some key facts about bees:
Bees are essential pollinators for many flowering plants.
Honey bees live in large colonies that consist of a queen, thousands of female worker bees, and a few male drones.
Bees communicate through a combination of chemical signals (pheromones) and complex movements known as the “waggle dance.”
Humans have been keeping honey bees for thousands of years.
Over the years we have shared some really fun bee crafts, so if you’re looking to celebrate World Bee Day I am sharing some amazing bee crafts for kids.
