On Friday my husband and I had a rare day off together. I was looking for lavender fields near me and came across Hitchin Lavender Fields, about an hour north of London. Over the last few years we’ve visited sunflower fields, pumpkin patches, poppy fields and wild flower meadows. It’s been a while since our last visit to a lavender field and we were excited to explore somewhere new to us.

Exploring Hitchin Lavender Fields

If you’re looking for lavender fields near London then I’d recommend driving an hour to the Hitchin Lavender Fields. You can pre-book your ticket or turn up and buy at the gate. The Lavender Fields were easy to find and there was a spacious car park (with an overflow for the really busy days). We showed our tickets at the gate and took a pic of the map so we could find our way around the site.

Obviously we were there to walk through the lavender fields, but there is plenty to do at the Hitchin Lavender Fields, including the lavender fields and display fields, museum and tea room.

The display fields contain 60 different types of lavender – you can’t pick from these fields. However you can pick lavender from the lavender fields, you just need to buy a paper bag from the ticket hut – don’t forget to bring your own scissors! There are apparently around 25 miles of lavender rows, as well as sunflowers and wildflowers.

The map doesn’t really do justice to the scale of the lavender fields at Hitchin. They cover a huge area and feature rows of neatly planted lavender. They are planted in rows up a hill so we walked through the rows to the top of the hill which gave us an amazing view over Hitchin Lavender Fields. There is also a sunflower and wildflower field but neither were in bloom during our visit in July.

The lavender fields were so colourful, they really stood out against the blue skies. We took our pup with us and he loved his walk through the lavender. Although the plants were full of bees we were careful to keep him away and he didn’t take any notice of them.

We cut a small bunch of lavender to bring home with us.

After we had explored the miles of lavender we headed back down the hill for a well deserved drink. There was a cool living shade area at Hitchin Lavender Fields but it was a little too warm for us.

We picked up some lavender flavoured ice creams and sat under some shade to enjoy the view.

There were a few fun photo props, such as a tractor and a swinging bench, but not nearly as many as we saw at the Pop Up Farm. Photo props are always fun, especially if you’re visiting with your kids!

After our refreshments we visited the tea room and barn shop. There was a small museum and lots of lavender plants to buy. The tea room looked amazing but we were full up after our ice cream so didn’t stop for anything else. You can visit the museum, tea rooms and play area for free if you don’t want to pay to visit the lavender fields.
