hay bales at the Pop Up Farm

The prettiest sunflower field near London

Posted on August 21, 2021August 21, 2022 by jenny

Living in the ‘burbs means we get the best of both worlds. Easy access into London on the tube, and easy access to the surrounding countryside. For the last few years we’ve enjoyed trips out of London to explore lavender fields, sunflower farms and pumpkin patches. All summer we’ve been looking forward to our annual trip to the prettiest sunflower field near London, just 30 minutes from where we live.

We’ve visited the Pop Up Farm before and have always enjoyed our visits. Only 15 miles from London, they run an experiential PYO farm which is a joy to visit. We booked our tickets online and headed off. We booked a one hour time slot but could stay as long as we wanted.

The site is well laid out and we entered the sunflower field excited to see the props which were new for 2021. As well as Insta frames, there were tractor tyres, an upright piano, a Fordson Major, pommel horse and Victorian bath hidden along the paths. The kids had a great time looking for them and of course, they made for great photo opportunities.

The Insta props were quirky and fun and definitely added even more fun to our visit.

The sunflowers were even more gorgeous than I remembered. We haven’t had much sun lately but the sunflowers didn’t seem to mind. Some of the sunflower heads were just huge, and attracted lots of bees and insects.

We were able to pick our own sunflowers towards the end of the sunflower field. We brought out own secateurs but you could buy them if you needed to. We cut 7 stems and tied them up with some string at the twine station. The sunflowers cost £1 each and we also picked up some sunflower seeds to plant our own next year.

After all the walking we stopped for some refreshments – delicious BBQ sweetcorn cooked on the special combine harvester BBQ! Then it was time for the kids to play on the huge hay bales which they really enjoyed running around. They made all kinds of games up and it definitely helped them burn off some energy.

Unfortunately you can’t take dogs to the Pop Up Farm (unless they are guide dogs) so our dog had to stay in the car. Apart from that we had a brilliant time and some gorgeous, hand-picked sunflowers to enjoy!

What a lovely, quirky sounding place. Great photos too. It looks as though your children had a whale of a time!
