One of the best things to come out of this period of lockdown has been the chance to discover our local area. We’ve lived in Ruislip for 6 years but also seem to seek out the same places, namely the Lido and the Farmers Market. With a lot more time on our hands, and a puppy to walk, we’ve discovered some gorgeous new places on our doorstep. It seems a long time ago since we ventured out to the ruins of the Battle of Britain House in Ruislip Woods. We decided to place a geocache there so recently went back.
Re-visiting the Battle of Britain House Ruislip
When we first discovered the exact location of the Battle of Britain House back in April, we walked through bluebells and not much else to find it. Although the formal gardens were over grown they were still easily walked through. Fast forward 6 weeks and the place looked completely different. There were huge rhododendron bushes in flower as well as the odd snapdragon and brambles everywhere. I had to carry the poor puppy to the front steps on the house as he just couldn’t push his way through.
If you’re looking for a fun geocache in Ruislip then I would recommend the one we placed here. It’s not too hard to find and you will get the chance to explore the ruins of the house.
This time we approached the house from a different angle and discovered some interesting ruins nearby which we hadn’t discovered on our last visit.
We found the brick ruins of an l-shaped building, complete with a partial wall and cellars. It was quite a big structure with a channel through the middle of it and an old metal ladder down into the lower floor.
The children loved exploring it and came up with all kinds of ideas of what it could have been. They desperately wanted it to be a swimming pool, I thought it might have been a green house.
Who knows, but it certainly added to the atmosphere of the place.
