“If you are curious, you’ll find the puzzles around you. If you are determined, you will solve them.” I love this quote from Erno Rubik., the designer of the Rubik’s Cube. Did you know he designed the Rubik’s Cube in 1974 and today it is considered the world’s best-selling toy?
A few weeks ago we received a bundle of the latest Rubik’s toys. My children have always been intrigued by my husband’s Rubik’s Cube and these have kept them entertained over the summer holidays. Amongst the products we received were the Rubik’s Cage, Rubik’s Edge, Rubik’s Orbit, Rubik’s Block, Rubik’s Match and Rubik’s 3×3. We all had our favourites but I can honestly say that Rubik’s Cage and Rubik’s Edge were firm favourites.
Rubik’s Cage is a brain-bending, mind-twisting strategy game, where the aim is to get 3 cubies in a row to win! It may sound easy to get 3 in a row, but Rubik’s Cage is not as simple as it may seem as you can twist the layers and flip it upside down – so the cubies move around! The cubies are big and colourful and this has been a big hit with my children.
Rubik’s Edge is one layer of a standard 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube and it’s trickier than it looks. Mix it up and try to get the colours realigned so that each side has only one colour. The slim profile makes it a great “go anywhere” puzzle. Fiddle with it and try to form cool shapes! Both my children are able to solve this one, it’s a great toy to start them off on their Rubik’s journey. It’s also pocket size which means it lives in my handbag and comes everywhere with us.

The humble rubiks cube was invented in 1974
1974, does anyone remember rubiks magic? my mum became a school ground legend by being able to fix them. Pupils would swarm around me every break time asking if she could fix them. I learnt then that she could fix almost anything.

Rubik’s cube was invented in 1980 if you put the name and invention together. It was called the magic cube prior to this from 1974, but was rebranded the Rubik’s cube which I think was as great a decision as the invention itself, thanks Erno for such a great invention a fellow cuber since 1980.
