watercolour snow paint STEM activity for kids from the gingerbread house blog

This year we are all about embracing Winter. It’s easy to stay inside during the colder months but it’s important to get outside, whatever the weather. We’ve had a pretty mild winter so far in the UK but I’ve been busy Pinning all kinds of Winter activities to keep my children busy. They love to play with snow so I came up with this fun Winter STEM Activity for them – watercolour snow paint!

Our watercolour snow paint is a real Winter boredom buster, read on for our simple winter craft activity to keep kids having fun. STEM play is great for encouraging kids, and our simple watercolour snow paint encourages them to look at the physical properties of snow, mix colours, see what happens when snow melts and hopefully create some colourful art!

Watercolour snow paint supplies:

You will also need:
Mixing spoons
Small containers

How to make watercolour snow paint

Add 1/2 cup of snow to each small container. Get the kids to help ‘measure’ the snow out using measuring spoons if you have them.

Add a drop or two of food colouring to each cup of snow and mix with a spoon. Let the kids put on an apron to protect their clothes and help with this, they will see the physical effects of adding colour to the white snow, if you have any leftover snow you can give them a separate bowl to mix more than one colour.

Set out some scrap newspaper onto the table and place the white card stock on top.

Use a paint brush to dip into the snow paint and begin to paint. Explore what happens when you drop the watercolour snow paint from different heights and observe the effect of the snow paint on paper. There are so many different things to do with snow but watercolour snow paint is a lot of fun and easy to set up.
