You may have noticed we’ve been a little obsessed with the Gruffalo lately. We recently spent a lovely time in the deep dark wood hunting for the Gruffalo and friends on a Gruffalo activity trail. My children also enjoyed a fun Gruffalo-themed bento box for their lunch. I thought I would keep the theme going with some Gruffalo Story Stones.
Gruffalo Story Stone materials:
Smooth stones
Decopatch glue
Colour images of the Gruffalo, Snake, Owl, Fox and Mouse
How to make Gruffalo Story Stones:
First I chose some smooth stones from our stash, every time we visit the beach we bring back a pocketful of stones and shells, I knew they would be handy one day!
Make sure they’re free from dirt and sand, otherwise the picture won’t stick properly
Find your image, I used these pictures of the Gruffalo, Snake, Fox, Owl and Mouse. I cut around each picture as closely as I could.
I used decopatch glue and lightly brushed each stone, placed the picture on and brushed more glue over the top. Leave to dry.
Let’s play:
My children have great imaginations and I love listening to them play together. Little Sis really benefits from her time on her own but equally I see how she learns from her older brother. He is really imaginative with his toys so I was eager to see what they thought of the Gruffalo story stones.
My children grabbed the Gruffalo Story Stones as soon as they saw them. I was really happy to hear them shout the names of each animal and argue over who should hold which stone! We watched the animated version of the Gruffalo to refresh the story in their minds then I let them play.
There are so many possibilities with Story Stones, I was happy to let them free play with them. I listened to the little adventures they made up, watched them mix them with Legos and Playmobil, take them outside and have a great time with them.
Thank you Jenny. I lovely simple idea. I am going to do the Gruffalo with my new class at the start of term. This will make an excellent outdoor activity. I think I will hide the stones for them to ‘find’ as a starter.

What fantastic idea. We all loved the Gruffalo story (well some of us still do!) I think mine would have really enjoyed these when they were little. This idea is almost limitless isn’t it. I remember the kids having toy owls (from Mcdonalds if I remember right) and acting out Owl Babies as I read to them, taking a part each. I kind of want to go back 15 years so we can do this idea!
