Simple ways to refresh a family bathroom

Are you looking forward to the children breaking up from school and the Summer holidays starting next week? This school year has just flown by and I am so excited about spending 6 weeks with my children at home. Having recently returned to work we are looking forward to spending some time on the house. House work is the first thing I neglect when I’m working outside of the home!

Simple ways to refresh a family bathroom

A few years ago we had a new kitchen put into our house, now we are looking at refreshing our family bathroom. Thankfully it’s the only room we haven’t touched, apart from our small home office. I find planning home decorating fun, mainly due to Pinterest. There are ideas for every kind of project and budget, from small bathrooms to en-suite ones, the use of reclaimed materials to brand, spanking new fixtures and fittings.

We’ve been saving hard for our bathroom project, putting aside money each month. However, it can be hard to save alongside all our monthly outgoings. My mum has also been thinking about how to save money as she would love to modify her house with a stair lift to make her upstairs more accessible as she gets older. We’ve both moved house in the last 5 years and it’s amazing just how the price of property has jumped in the areas that we live. I found a useful online calculator that gives you a guide to how much your property has increased in value which is very interesting. Investing in property seems the best way for us to make money at the moment so it can only be a good thing to keep our house in order and keep it looking its best.

I love a project and have found some brilliant ideas for our family bathroom. You don’t have to replace the entire bathroom suite if your budget doesn’t stretch that far. There are simpler ways to update a bathroom.

One of the windows needs replacing in our bathroom window. I am so tempted to hide it behind a blind or loose curtain. The money saved could be spent on replacing the tiles or even swapping them for wallpaper on one of the walls.

An update is a great excuse to switch the colour up. I could never get rid of my Orla Kiely towels but I would happily swap my monochrome ones for a splash of colour. You can easily add in colourful accessories, if space permits, such as matching toothbrush holder and soap dish, plant pots or storage cabinets. I can see a trip to John Lewis may be on the cards.

Towel storage is a must and I’m still looking for a way to update our heated towel rail. It’s a dust magnet which I would love to replace.

I’ll be looking to breathe some life into our bathroom with the addition of some plants. For some reason I took out the money plant which had been thriving so need to find some more. I do love plants around the house and there’s definitely some space for one or more in our bathroom.

I always like to have a white bathroom so I can just change the towels and accessories when I want to have a change. Mich x

This is the best thing about having a neutral bathroom – and changing the details can really refresh the look of a place!
