Mini gingerbread house mug hangers

I’m not sure how many years ago I first Pinned a very cute little gingerbread house that sat on the edge of a cup. I fell in love with the idea but it remained an idea, it looked far too complicated to make at home!

Fast forward a few years and just before Christmas I spotted a Make Your Own Gingerbread Cottage kit in Lakeland. I hardly every go to Lakeland. I find their products pretty expensive but I couldn’t resist this – finally a chance to make my own little gingerbread houses!

This was a pretty lazy purchase. You can buy little cutters to buy your own house or make your own template from card. The Make Your Own Gingerbread Cottage kit from Lakeland included card templates to cut out, as well as edible glitter, white icing, sprinkles and dry gingerbread mix. All I needed to add was butter and golden syrup.

I mixed up the gingerbread dough and chilled it for half an hour.

Then I rolled it out and cut out the different parts – two each of the roof, gable and side for each mini gingerbread house mug hanger.

Despite chilling, the dough the biscuits spread during baking. So I had to work quickly to trim them with a sharp knife after they came out of the oven.

Then it was time for the really fun part – icing the mini gingerbread houses! This was a little tricky but each little house came together, and was covered with more white icing and a sprinkle of edible glitter. I found it helpful to build each house on the edge of a mug to make sure it balanced when the icing had dried.
