So today we finally made it to a lavender field. I’ve really wanted to go to the one at Hitchin but so far we haven’t made it. We’re visiting my mum for a few days so decided to visit Somerset Lavender. Lately my Instagram feed has been full of happy children standing in lavender. I was wondering what my children would think.
I love lavender. We grow it and use it at home (lavender play dough anyone?) and a few years ago we visited Isle of Wight Lavender and stocked up on lavender products. I’ve also bakedĀ lavender shortbread which you should definitely try if you like lavender.
Somerset Lavender lavender fields
Somerset Lavender is based at an old working farm in the beautiful village of Faulkland near Radstock. It’s open from May until September and is free of charge, but donations are welcome.
It’s a lovely place to visit. In the Lavender Field there are over five acres of Lavender which you can walk through and absorb the sight of more than 50,000 Lavender plants complete with bees and butterflies. As well as the Lavender there was also a huge section of Sunflowers. Alongside theĀ Lavender Field is a Lavender Garden with over 20 varieties of Lavender, and also a healing garden, packed full of useful herbs from the commonplace to more unusual varieties. There is a shop and cafe so you can easily spend a few hours.
Unfortunately my children weren’t as impressed as I was. They didn’t want to pose for any photos or stand near the lavender which was full of bees (understandable, I suppose!). Eventually they began to enjoy themselves, especially when we got to the cafe.
Sadly the lavender wasn’t very colourful although it smelled amazing. If we were to go again I would definitely go earlier in the summer. Find out more aboutĀ Somerset Lavender.

August 17, 2017 at 6:50 pmIt must have looked beautiful although my children would have been the same. We are not too keen on being near anything that stings.
