Apple print butterflies {A-Z Play at Home series}

Today I am starting a new series on my blog – the A-Z Play at Home blog hop organised by Teach Me Mommy. The idea is lovely and simple – to use everyday objects around the home for crafting or a learning activity.

The first letter is A so I challenged my 7 year old to come up with something. He chose acrylic paint, as this is something that our house is full of, and apples. So we combined the two to make some awesome apple print butterflies, read on for our tutorial.

Equipment to make apple print butterflies:
An apple cut in half
Acrylic paint – purple, black and white
A4 card

How to make apple print butterflies:

The first step was to set up our craft table with all the equipment we needed and cut the apple into two halves.

My son poured out some of the acrylic paint into a tray and tried dipping the apple into it. It didn’t cover enough of the apple so he used a paintbrush to ensure it was fully covered.

Then he pressed it down onto the card. He did this a few times, adding more paint onto the apple when necessary.

We left it to dry for an hour. Then it was time to turn the apple prints into butterflies. My son painted on bodies and heads with the black acrylic, and added some detail on to the wings with the white paint.

He got a bit carried away with trying to make the butterfly wings symmetrical – can you tell he’s learning about insects at school at the moment? He was pretty pleased with the final picture and I was really glad he was able to use things we already had around the house.
