My children adore any book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. They were so excited when we got our hands on their latest collaboration – The Scarecrow’s Wedding. This is a great story for any time of year but especially around Valentine’s Day.
The Scarecrows’ Wedding is a fantastic love story. Two scarecrows, Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay, are planning the perfect wedding. But wicked scarecrow, Reginald Rake, has other ideas and almost ruins their special day. Harry must become a hero before he and Betty can have the wedding of their dreams.
We love this story and we came up with a fun craft to make our own Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay from cardboard tubes.
Then I set the children a scavenger hunt based on the list of Things They Would Need on the Day to make the best wedding yet:
A dress of white feathers
a necklace of shells
lots of pink flowers
two rings
and some bells
We found everything but the pink flowers so we thought we would make our own from cupcake cases.
Materials needed to make a cupcake case flower bouquet:
coloured cupcakes cases
glue stick
sequins
paper
coloured pencils
How to make a cupcake case flower bouquet:
We picked a selection of pink and red paper cupcake cases, turned them over and flattened them with our hands so we could cover the base of them with glue. Then my daughter stuck them to a sheet of card, putting a little more glue in between the layers of cupcake cases to make sure they stuck.
We decorated the inside of each flower with colourful sequins which we also glued in place. We wanted to make our cupcake flowers into a bouquet for Betty O’Barley so my daughter drew on the stems. We love our cupcake case flower bouquet, perfect for a scarecrows’ wedding.
I hope you enjoyed our craft ideas based on The Scarecrows’ Wedding. Today I’ve joined up with The Pleasantest Thing and other crafty bloggers to take part in a Read and Play linky based around Valentine’s Day picture books.
