10 Back to School traditions

Is it just me or is there a lot to buy in order to get everyone back to school in September? The school uniform, shoes and stationery is bought so my thoughts have been turning to how to commemorate the first day back at school.

When my children started school we started our own traditions. In previous years I’ve taken lots of photos of my children looking all sparkly and clean. Last year we used our lightbox to record the date too. There are lots of ways to commemorate the first day of term. Here are 10 back to school traditions – it’s never too late to start your own family traditions!

  • Use pavement chalk to write on the ground and take a photo of your child next to it
  • Make a special photo frame to take that important first day of school photo. Even better, let them make their own frame. Take a look at our kid-made photo frame.
  • Write the year and what they want to be when they grow up – see if it changes every year
  • Find a chalkboard or lightbox to write a good luck message to your child
  • Make a cute t-shirt with the year they will graduate so they can grow into it, take a photo of them wearing it every year
  • Take a photo in front of your school sign
  • Make photo props such as an apple, oversized pencil or mortar board for your first day of school photo
  • Measure your child agains a wall so you can see how far they’ve grown over the school year
  • Take a photo of them holding the previous years’ photo – we started this and it’s very cute to watch them grow
  • Find paper mache letters to spell out FIRST DAY or similar, decorate them with their favourite print or pattern

Do you have your own back to school traditions? If so, I’d love to hear them.

What lovely ideas…I always take photos in the same place so I can see how much they’ve grown over the years. x

It’s so important to make the transition of moving up a year fun and exciting! I try and make everything surrounding school a positive experience for my kids even shopping for back to school uniform.
