Over the last few weeks my son has been making a papier-mâché play scene for his Clangers figures. They live on, and inside, a small moon-like planet which we tried to re-create. He really enjoyed making it, and I’ve enjoyed helping him, so we just had to share it here.
We used:
Papier-mâché paste
Strips of newspaper
Empty cardboard boxes, tubes and tubs from the recycling bin
Black and white paint
Time to make: 2 days
DIY Planet Clangers play scene
My 5 year old spent some time making a landscape inside a large box lid. He used cardboard tubes and boxes which I helped him cut to place small bowls inside for the Clangers to live inside. When he was happy with the layout he glued the boxes and tubes inside the lid.
Then we mixed up the papier-mâché paste. I hadn’t done this since school but it was fun! And smelled exactly how I remembered.
We cut some newspapers into small strips, about 2″ x 5″ and began covering our Planet Clangers play scene with the newspaper and lots of papier-mâché glue.We left it to dry then covered everything again to make sure there were no gaps .
It took a day to dry completely, probably because my son used so much glue. The next day he mixed black and white paint to make grey and painted the whole play scene. He gave it two coats to make sure it was covered completely.
So far we have three Clangers figures, Mother, Tiny and the Soup Dragon who live in our little planet. They still need some lids to protect them from meteorite showers!
After a couple of days we decided they needed a few more things to keep them busy. So we made Tiny a see saw from some craft sticks, spray painted gold.
A boat for Tiny from an old milk bottle, spray painted gold.
And of course a space rocket and launch pad, made from another milk bottle, cardboard box and craft sticks, spray painted gold. Phew.
As well as the Supersoft Clangers plush toys you can also buy Clangers Collectable Figures. We have a couple of packs, one containing Mother and Tiny, and another with the Soup Dragon, prices start at a pocket money friendly £4.99.
We’ve had fun making our very own Clangers planet play scene for our Clangers to live on. My son is keen to add to it so I think we may have a go at making Blue String Pudding and a volcanic soup well next.

This takes me straight back to watching Blue Peter. What an awesome make! x #letkidsbekids
Thanks, I used to love to watch Blue Peter to see what they made!
Your creation is fantastic. I love the new (and the original) series of the Clangers and have been on the look out for some figures. #letkidsbekids
Thank you, it was a lovely project which definitely kept my son busy for a few days.
Wow, that looks amazing, what a fantastic idea. We haven’t done paper mache, but we really must. Love your creation, especially with the Clangers figure to play with too.
Thanks for linking #LetKidsbeKids
I was a little nervous about trying it with my 5 year old but he really enjoyed it. I’m thinking a homemade pinata might be fun to try 🙂
