Teaching community spirit {Wall’s Helping Hand}

Recently I’ve started helping every week with my son’s Beaver group. He’s been a Beaver for just over a year and he really enjoys it. The group leader is really well organised which means they have a well planned programme of events and activities which is really complements the academic stuff he learns at school.

He loves to collect badges which I find are a great incentive. Since he’s been a Beaver he’s been camping, to a water activity day, horse riding, hiking, and so much more. It’s great to be part of something like this, he’s made friends in his wider community, been able to contribute to the community and learn more about himself too. These are all things I believe in too, which is why I’m happy to support him. I’m sure you can teach these kinds of lessons at home, but being part of an organised group is a much more fun way to learn!

He’s recently been made a ‘buddy’ to a new member and I love watching him look out for someone else. Of course, he has a younger sister at home, but this is a good way of being kind to others. I want my children to learn about the value of selflessness, so we regularly give unwanted toys to our local charity shop, and support our local food bank too. We may not be hugely well off but there is always room to share what we do have.

Wall’s have recently launched a nationwide search for a person, club or local facility that deserves a special thank you for its contribution to the local community. The chosen project will receive an amazing £5,000 makeover from Wall’s team of ‘helping hands’.

 

Maybe there’s a local Beavers’ clubhouse that’s a bit dilapidated, or a community hall the kids attend that could do with new changing rooms, or it could be an individual who’s always giving to their local community and deserves a new garden or bathroom in return.
