Reluctant potty training

My toddler will be 3 next month, I’m not quite sure where the time has gone but I have one amazing little boy. We’ve been talking about potty training for a while now. We have a potty, we have training pants, we read books about going to the toilet and we have a reward chart. Nothing seems to be happening.

I’m not in any rush to get him potty trained as I know that wouldn’t be beneficial to anyone, he just doesn’t seem that interested -still. We always encourage him to tell us when he needs a nappy change and we’ve filled a couple of reward charts. In fact we’ve filled so many reward charts we’ve had to change the reward! Every time he correctly tells us he needs a clean nappy he gets a star sticker, when he fills a line he gets a reward. Lately the reward has been a new Disney Pixar Cars toy or a new train for his Thomas & Friends train set. This is proving quite expensive, especially as his daddy taught him the slogan “Stars mean Cars!”

So this week we started a new system. Each line of stars means £1 which goes into his money jar. When he has enough money we can go to the toy shop and he can buy a new toy. Hopefully this will still reward him with his potty training but also teach him the value or money (and more importantly, stop me spoiling him!).

Every so often an invention comes along which makes me think. My mum was recently telling me about the iPotty which would be perfect for my son. He’s always loved technology and is already addicted to my phone, iPad and laptop. I don’t even want to know at what age he’ll ask for his own phone. Anyway, sitting down on a potty whilst playing with my iPad would surely be the encouragement he needs to start his potty training. What do you think?

  1. Sweet little jar. Ipad could work out expensive….children seem to like them as much (more?) than adults!
