Michael Rosen Chocolate Cake {book review}

I’m pretty sure that all parents of small children will have read at least one book my Michael Rosen to their child. Mine adored We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and still do. Last year we visited the Discover Children’s Story Centre in London to explore Michael Rosen’s exhibition Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake & Bad Things. It was amazing so i was excited to hear about Michael Rosen’s new book, Chocolate Cake.

When I was a boy, I had a favourite treat. It was when my mum made . . .CHOCOLATE CAKE!

Fantastically funny and full of silly noises, this is award winning author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen’s love letter to every child’s favourite treat – CHOCOLATE CAKE. Together with Kevin Waldron, Michael’s spoken poem masterpiece is released as a picture book for the very first time, offering a whole extra bite of the hilarious, characterful classic.

With Michael’s YouTube performance of Chocolate Cake proving to be a bona fide sensation with over 3 million views to date, there’s no doubt that this brand new edition will be a firm favourite amongst families; and a total joy to read aloud. Waldron’s comedic caricatures bring the original poem to life in a unique and hilarious way, filling familiar sounding scenes with surprising detail to spot in-between verses.

Chocolate Cake has helped cement Michael Rosen’s reputation as one of the UK’s most popular children’s poets, and during the last two decades, has become a staple on parenting, literary and educational websites.

CHOCOLATE CAKE, words by Michael Rosen and pictures by Kevin Waldron was published on 24th August 2017 by Puffin, Hardback £12.99.
