GoldieBlox review and giveaway

GoldieBlox, the award-winning toy range from the US, has landed in the UK! Created by engineer and entrepreneur Debbie Sterling, GoldieBlox aims to introduce engineering concepts to girls at an early age, providing them with more options and spawning a movement to disrupt pink toy aisles everywhere. I love this idea so was delighted to be sent a few sets to review with my children.

Each of the three sets (Goldie Blox and the Spinning Machine, Goldie Blox and the Dunk Tank and Goldie Blox and the Parade Float) features an interactive toy, containing a book series and construction set, which encourages kids to build in the context of a narrative. The stories feature Goldie, a girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines.

Little Sis chose the Goldie Blox and the Spinning Machine set to try. It contained a book and 33 pieces (including a peg board, axles, blocks, ribbon, crank, washers and wheels). You can help Goldie build a spinning machine to help her dog chase his tail. She shows you the pieces and how they work. My children loved listening to the story and building the spinning machine. The set is recommended for ages 4-9 and we had a 2, 4 and 10 year old who all had fun learning about belt drive, friction, problem solving, spatial relationships and basic building principles.

I love the concept of these sets. I hope both my children will have an interest in engineering and technology past the age of 8 (which research has shown is the drop off point for girls) and whilst I can see this set is marketed at girls I think it would appeal to both sexes. Goldie is a great role model for girls and boys as she’s inventive and relate-able. Plus all GoldieBlox sets are compatible, so the more sets you have, the greater the possibilities!

The Goldie Blox sets are available to buy from John Lewis and Amazon UK.
