Giveaway: baby names by Laura Emerson

Choosing the perfect child’s name was top of my list when I was pregnant. Despite having thought about it for years, when I was actually pregnant none of the names felt right. Not for the want of trying but the poor toddler was nameless for his first two weeks. We had a long list, then a short list. Nothing suited him. His grandfather started referring to his as Fred and eventually we just forced ourselves to sit down and decide.

Little Sis had it slightly easier with a short list of three boys’ names and three girls’ names and we had pretty much decided within a few days of her being born.

There are lots of baby books on the market but baby names by Laura Emerson is a really lovely version with beautiful photographs. According to the blurb “Along with the A-Z lists of both boys’ and girls’ names, you’ll also find fascinating themed lists to get your creative juices flowing. These range from great one-syllable names for baby boys to names with royal connotations for baby girls, taking in the names that are fastest rising in popularity along the way.”

This is a beautiful book and would make a lovely gift for expectant parents. It contains more than 3000 names along with their origin and meanings. Baby names by Laura Emerson is priced at £9.99, but read on if you would like a chance to win a copy.

  1. personaly I prefer the traditional names, my two children are called Hannah Amelia and Jacob Elliott.

  2. UNUSUAL NAMES IF I EVER HAD A GIRL SHE WOULD CE CALLED TANI – LEE BUT SOME UNUSUAL NAMES SOUND STUPID SO ID BE CAREFUL

  3. Modern, my daughter is named Eden.
Currently pregnant with baby two (who is shy so we dont know if its a he or she) need some inspiration for names lol

  4. I think the older traditional names are coming back into fashion. I am happy with what seems right for the baby, can you believe I spent abour 4 weeks testing out names on my daughter. She ended up as Samantha, because I liked it, thought it suited her and it means the listening one and as she managed to come out with a hand behind her ear as if she was listening it seemed very appropriate!

  5. Almost all the names we are currently considering are very traditional, such as Arthur and Irene

  6. I prefer traditional names but some ‘modern’ names make you smile, but always remember the child is the one who has to live with it 😉

  7. Working in a school the horror of some of the ‘modern’ names that the children have is enough to put me off. Traditional all the way

  8. We’re trying to choose a name for our first baby at the minute. I like loads of names, OH likes pretty much none. I seem to be drawn to more traditional names though.

  9. Traditional and not one where 10 other kids in their class will have the same name!

  10. I tend to prefer traditional whereas my husband likes modern names! Think it’s going to take us a while!

  11. I’m a bit mixed on this, I do love some traditional names like Lily but I like unusual ones too like Mara, River, Robyn.

  12. I prefer vintage definitely – everyone thinks my son Aidan’s name is modern but there was a St Aidan around in the 1300’s!

  13. I would prefer our child to have an unusual name, whether traditional or modern. I would like a decent name book to help us choose a name for our first little one.

  14. Traditional but unusual. I chose Anastasia for my eldest daughter & Austin (old English for Augustine) for my youngest son.
