Choosing the perfect child’s name was top of my list when I was pregnant. Despite having thought about it for years, when I was actually pregnant none of the names felt right. Not for the want of trying but the poor toddler was nameless for his first two weeks. We had a long list, then a short list. Nothing suited him. His grandfather started referring to his as Fred and eventually we just forced ourselves to sit down and decide.
Little Sis had it slightly easier with a short list of three boys’ names and three girls’ names and we had pretty much decided within a few days of her being born.
There are lots of baby books on the market but baby names by Laura Emerson is a really lovely version with beautiful photographs. According to the blurb “Along with the A-Z lists of both boys’ and girls’ names, you’ll also find fascinating themed lists to get your creative juices flowing. These range from great one-syllable names for baby boys to names with royal connotations for baby girls, taking in the names that are fastest rising in popularity along the way.”
This is a beautiful book and would make a lovely gift for expectant parents. It contains more than 3000 names along with their origin and meanings. Baby names by Laura Emerson is priced at £9.99, but read on if you would like a chance to win a copy.

January 28, 2013 at 8:44 pmI think the older traditional names are coming back into fashion. I am happy with what seems right for the baby, can you believe I spent abour 4 weeks testing out names on my daughter. She ended up as Samantha, because I liked it, thought it suited her and it means the listening one and as she managed to come out with a hand behind her ear as if she was listening it seemed very appropriate!
