With technology at our fingertips, there’s a constant need to escape. Combined with the constant hustle and bustle of everyday life, the desire for relaxation is even stronger. Book nooks were quick to gain popularity; becoming a beloved spot for most as it introduced a quiet retreat within the home to vanish into a good book for an hour or so. But like everything, this tiny corner couldn’t keep up as we sought out more expansive comfort.
A Cosy Cave is more than a book nook. It’s a space that invites warmth, serenity, and even a little bit of magic into your home.
Choosing the Perfect Spot
The essence of a Cosy Cave is seclusion. You want to find a spot that lets you step away from the chaos of everyday life. No matter how small, you can easily create the perfect hideaway with some imagination.
If you have stairs, consider using the space beneath them. Bay windows can make for a cosy set up too, especially if you have curtains to really hide you away from the world. For a more creative location, think about repurposing an unused closet into a Cosy Cave. If you don’t have a separate space, you can always try partitioning off a corner of a larger room. Using a screen or bookshelf for privacy.
In the grand scheme of things, the location doesn’t matter. So long as you create a space where you feel away from the world and free to unwind.
Surround Yourself with Soothing Colours
Colours are essential in setting the tone of your Cosy Cave. However, it’s not a case of soft, muted hues being better than darker shades.
Warm neutrals such as beige, cream, and soft brown create a calming, natural atmosphere. Whereas deep jewel tones like navy, emerald, and deep burgundy can make a space feel luxurious and intimate. If you’re after a light, airy, and soothing space, soft pastels like sage green, blush pink, or lavender are ideal. But, if you want to feel connected to nature, earthy greens and browns can bring a bit of the outdoors inside.
Choosing the right colour palette can turn even a small space into a beautiful retreat. Use paint, throw blankets, cushions, or even wallpaper to introduce your chosen colours into your Cosy Cave.
Don’t Overlook What’s Underfoot
It might surprise you, but flooring is a big factor in the comfort of your Cosy Cave.
If you’re working with hard floors like luxury vinyl tiles or solid hardwood, you can layer soft rugs to create a cosy feel both visually and physically. It’s an easy solution that stops you from thinking about replacing the floor entirely. Naturally, carpet provides the desired warmth underfoot, so this is often a go- to.
You should also consider the colours of your flooring and accessories. For instance, dark wood flooring already creates an intimate feeling, but adding a light, pastel rug can help balance this out.
Setting the Mood with Lighting
There’s no point in creating a Cosy Cave that doesn’t have the right ambience, which is where lighting comes into play. Avoid overhead lighting and instead go for soft, warm lights that create a welcoming glow.
For an easy and affordable way to add a touch of whimsy, string fairy lights up across your space. Consider candles, flameless or real, for more of a cosy, intimate feel. Place a floor or table lamp with a warm-toned bulb nearby for easy access to brighter light when needed. If you’re working with a small space. wall-mounted sconces can add light without clutter.
The right lighting will make your nook feel magical. Giving you just enough illumination to enjoy a book without straining your eyes.
Crucial Comfy Seating
A Cosy Cave isn’t complete without comfortable seating.
Oversized armchairs are perfect for spacious nooks. Choose one that’s deep and snug enough to curl up in with your favourite blanket and book. If your Cosy Cave has taken on a more relaxed, bohemian vibe, consider floor cushions and bean bags; these are also ideal if you’re working with a smaller space.
Make use of a bay window with a custom-built or DIY window bench. Giving you a cosy, scenic spot to read. If you have more room available, consider modular seating that you can configure as you like. Letting you have the flexibility to lie down, sit up, or stretch out when need be.
You want to have enough space to full relax. So it’s important to prioritise comfort over aesthetics in this
case. But, the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive!
Bring on the Cosy Layers
Unsurprisingly, one of the defining characteristics of a Cosy Cave is layered textures. Ones that make you want to sink in and stay a while.
Chunky knit blankets, faux fur throws, or lightweight cotton blankets can all be layered to create a nest of sorts. Go for an assortment of cushions in different textures like velvet, linen, or corduroy. Mixing large floor cushions with smaller, softer pillows to create this ideal plush environment.
Draping fabric over the top of your cave can help you create a literal cocoon. Curtains or canopies are a great way to introduce this extra softness to your space. Adding more tactile quality to make your snug spot all the more inviting.
Making the Cosy Cave Yours
It’s all well and good creating a tactile heaven, but you need to make it feel like it’s your personal hideaway.
If you’re Cosy Cave is for reading, then make sure there’s plenty of bookshelves to hold your favourite reads or your ‘to be read’ pile. Floating shelves are perfect if you’ve got limited space. Hang some of your favourite artwork or photos to give the space a personal feel.
A small side table can be handy for holding a cup of tea or coffee as well as candles or your current read. Some plants can help breathe life into your snug nook as well as scented elements like a small diffuser or incense with your favourite scent.
Don’t forget to keep your Cosy Cave tidy and organised. Use baskets, ottomans or benches with built-in storage compartments for practical and comfortable storage solutions. Escaping from the chaotic world to a messy nook won’t help you rest!
Every little detail counts when you’re creating this sanctuary. Make it represent your unique style and personality.
